Gotoku Sakai, and what he means to the USA

What if we told you that there's a player born in the United States who is on the rise? What if we told you that he's only 20 years old and will be playing in one of the best leagues in the world, a league that U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann is very familiar with? What if we told you this player has yet to earn a cap for any senior national team?

The player is Gotoku Sakai, who was born in New York City to a Japanese father and German mother. He has been loaned to VfB Stuttgart from his Japanese club Albirex Niigata.

Sakai has appeared in some youth teams for Japan, so there is virtually no chance he will play for any other country. He joins fellow VfB man Shinji Okazaki, Schalke defender Atsuto Ochida, Augsburg midfielder Hajime Hosogai, Wolfsburg midfielder Makato Hasebe and Dortmund superstar Shinji Kagawa as Japanese stalwarts in the Bundesliga. There are other Blue Samurai stars in the world's top leagues with Inter's Yuto Nagatomo and Novara's Takayuki Morimoto in Italy. Perhaps Japan's best player is CSKA hitman Keisuke Honda.

Sakai, meanwhile, is part of a young generation of rising Japanese players that includes Arsenal's Ryo Miyaichi and Bayern Munich's Takashi Usami, two teenagers who are on the cusp of big things.

Meanwhile, back in the United States, we have the same cast of characters playing in Europe - Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Steve Cherundolo, Carlos Bocanegra, Jonathan Spector and a few goalkeepers. Where are our rising players learning the game in the world's best leagues? Guess what, our teenagers and young players don't have what it takes to do what Sakai, Miyaichi and Usami are doing. And that tells you what you need to know about football here in the States.

Bundesliga Matchday 17 review

Friday night

Bayern München v. 1. FC Köln
Prediction: 3-0
Actual result: 3-0

Even Ribery's dismissal could not stop Bayern from maintaining their three-point gap at the summit ahead of their Cup tie in Bochum.

Saturday
SC Freiburg v. Borussia Dortmund
Prediction: 1-2
Actual result: 1-4

Is this the kind of champagne football we can look forward to from Dortmund after the break? Stay tuned.

Hamburger SV v. FC Augsburg
Prediction: 2-1
Actual result: 1-1

Hamburg's 19-point haul and eight-match unbeaten streak don't look too shabby now after their dreadful start.

Bayer Leverkusen v. 1. FC Nürnberg
Prediction: 2-0
Actual result: 0-3

This stunner of a scoreline could see Dutt get the sack. He may prefer that as opposed to watching his side play Club World Cup champion Barcelona.

VfL Wolfsburg v. VfB Stuttgart
Prediction: 1-1
Actual result: 1-0

Stuttgart had a stuttering finish to their first half and Europe may be too far away now.

1899 Hoffenheim v. Hertha BSC
Prediction: 1-1
Actual result: 1-1

No surprise that Babbel is out at Hertha. The Bundesliga draw specialists are not safe yet, and neither is Hoffenheim.

FC Schalke 04 v. Werder Bremen
Prediction: 3-1
Actual result: 5-0

There was no doubt that Bremen would falter. Our only mistake was to believe the scoreline would be semi-respectable.

Sunday
1. FC Kaiserslautern v. Hannover 96
Prediction: 1-2
Actual result: 1-1

The point won't suit either side's ambitions - 'Lautern have a huge trip to Berlin for a Cup tie on Wednesday while Hannover can get ready for the second half.

Mönchengladbach v. FSV Mainz 05
Prediction: 1-0
Actual result: 1-0

Mainz may have deserved a better fate but 'Gladbach cap a terrific first half heading into their Cup match with flying Schalke FC.

Hertha BSC fire Babbel!!!

As predicted in our Matchday 17 predictions, Hertha BSC have fired coach Markus Babbel. The ungrateful Babbel refused the club's generous offer of a contract extension since he is dreaming of somehow coaching Bayern. Hertha had enough of his foolishness and he is gone.

Candidates to replace him include former Frankfurt and Leverkusen boss Michael Skibbe.

As for now, Hertha's main focus is the upcoming DFB Cup matchup with Kaiserslautern, with a spot in the quarter-finals on the line.

Good riddance Babbel!

Bundesliga Matchday 17 predictions

Friday night

Bayern München v. 1. FC Köln
Prediction: 3-0

This mouth-watering fixture pits top scorers Gomez and Podolski probably playing his last match for the Goats. Bayern have somehow failed to win their last five at home against Köln but that should change tonight.

Saturday
SC Freiburg v. Borussia Dortmund
Prediction: 1-2
The champions should avoid another slip-up, but a discontent Barrios bears watching in the second half.

Hamburger SV v. FC Augsburg
Prediction: 2-1
Hamburg are unbeaten in seven and could gain a first-half finish close to the top of the table.

Bayer Leverkusen v. 1. FC Nürnberg
Prediction: 2-0
Robin Dutt blamed Champions League football for his side's sixth-place standing. He won't have that excuse in the future after drawing holders FC Barcelona.

VfL Wolfsburg v. VfB Stuttgart
Prediction: 1-1
Neither side has been lighting the country on fire and both look like they are relishing the winter break.

1899 Hoffenheim v. Hertha BSC
Prediction: 1-1
Compper is suspended for Hoffenheim while Berlin coach Markus Babbel could be out the door in this matchup of mid-table mediocrity.

FC Schalke 04 v. Werder Bremen
Prediction: 3-1
Thomas Schaaf's side have been awful on the road and Schalke should be well worth the three points.

Sunday
1. FC Kaiserslautern v. Hannover 96
Prediction: 1-2
'Lautern need points but could be caught loking ahead to next week's Cup tie with Hertha while Hannover have no fixtures remaining after this one.

Mönchengladbach v. FSV Mainz 05
Prediction: 1-0
Reus looks to make a heroic return and give 'Gladbach a boost in their finale.

Brad Freidel was right

With US superstar Clint Dempsey (pictured above) scoring in tonight's Europa League action, it reminds us at TBG of the recent remarks made by Spurs 'keeper Brad Friedel about Dempsey and faux US star Landon Donovan.

Friedel told the BBC: "You get a player like a Landon Donovan, who in my opinion chose to take the easy road and stay in the States. It's much harder to ply your trade over here. (The Premier League) is the best league in the world to play in, and this is where (Dempsey) got better in my opinion. This is where he became one of the best the United States ever produced."

Well now Friedel is backing down from his words. That's really a shame because he is 100 percent right.

For Dempsey to become the greatest Premier League goal scorer in US history is quite an accomplishment. Dempsey has played in a European final. Does anyone in their right mind compare Donovan - probably the third-best player on his own team this past season - to Dempsey.

The answer is a resounding no. Clint Dempsey represents the best of American soccer. Landon Donovan represents taking the easy way out. That's the way it is.

Bundesliga Matchday 16 review

Friday night

Hertha BSC v. FC Schalke 04
Prediction: 2-2
Actual result: 1-2

Schalke are even on points with second-placed Dortmund after a gritty win in the nation's capital against a poor Hertha side.

Saturday
Werder Bremen v. VfL Wolfsburg
Prediction: 3-0
Actual result: 4-1

Bremen lost 4-1 the week prior so a reversal of that result was in order.

1. FC Köln v. SC Freiburg
Prediction: 2-1
Actual result: 4-0

It wasn't hard to see Köln prevail but the margin was a bit much as Freiburg look like true relegation fodder.

FSV Mainz 05 v. Hamburger SV
Prediction: 1-1
Actual result: 0-0

Excellent prediction by TBG as the honours ended even.

1. FC Nürnberg v. 1899 Hoffenheim
Prediction: 1-0
Actual result: 0-2

US International Timmy Chandler's first-half dismissal paved the way for FCN to join the relegation mix.

FC Augsburg v. Mönchengladbach
Prediction: 1-2
Actual result: 1-0

The shock result of the weekend proved that Reus is badly needed for 'Gladbach, as if that wasn't already known.

Hannover 96 v. Bayer Leverkusen
Prediction: 2-2
Actual result: 0-0

This point probably did not help either side's European ambitions, with Leverkusen now in sixth place.

Sunday
Borussia Dortmund v. 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Prediction: 5-1
Actual result: 1-1

A stunning point at the Signal Iduna for K-Town has surely ended the champions' hopes of a repeat.

VfB Stuttgart v. Bayern München
Prediction: 1-1
Actual result: 1-2

Bayern showed their class after going a goal down early and now must navigate the final league fixture and a cup tie without Ribery.

Bundesliga Matchday 16 predictions

Friday night

Prediction: 3-0
The Wolves have been tough opponents in the past for Bremen, but that should change this time.

1. FC Köln v. SC Freiburg
Prediction: 2-1
Köln are limping to the break but should have more than enough to take down a mediocre Freiburg.

FSV Mainz 05 v. Hamburger SV
Prediction: 1-1
This one has draw written all over it with Hamburg on the uptick and Mainz generally good enough for a point at home.

1. FC Nürnberg v. 1899 Hoffenheim
Prediction: 1-0
Both sides have six losses away from home so Der Klub should have the advantage here.

FC Augsburg v. Mönchengladbach
Prediction: 1-2
'Gladbach was well worth their point against champions Dortmund without Reus and should make the most of this trip to Bavaria.

Hannover 96 v. Bayer Leverkusen
Prediction: 2-2
We'll call this a Hannover 'hangover' for Leverkusen after failing to top their Champions League group with a sloppy draw.

Sunday
Borussia Dortmund v. 1. FC Kaiserslautern
Prediction: 5-1
Expect the champions to take out their Champions League frustrations on a hapless 'Lautern.

VfB Stuttgart v. Bayern München
Prediction: 1-1
Bayern have one win in their last four away league fixtures and should be held by a battling VfB.

Leverkusen meet American baseball star 'A-Rod'

On Tuesday, Bayer Leverkusen missed a chance to qualify as group winners in the Champions League with a disappointing 1-1 draw at Genk.

On Wednesday, Leverkusen received a pick-me-up from a top athlete in world sport. Leverkusen have hosted their share of famous athletes in North Rhine-Westphalia, most notably LA Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant. Great sportsmen from around the globe love the club's cryogenic chamber.

Euro 2012 Analysis

The official mascots, Slavek and Slavko (pictured above), are excited about the Euro 2012, are you?

The draw was held Friday and we are all set for an exciting Euro 2012 from Poland and Ukraine. Let us analyze the draw.

Group A: The Poles hit the jackpot as they drew Russia, the Czech Republic and Greece in their group - easily the most boring of the four. The Poland-Greece opener could be the worst match of the entire tournament. Russia are the hot favourites to advance, and we believe Greece will join them.

Group B: Here is the vaunted "Group of Death," with the Netherlands, Germany and Portugal joining a dangerous Denmark side. The pressure should be on the Dutch to start with three points against the Danes. We believe Germany and Portugal will survive this gauntlet.

Group C: The opener between defending champion Spain and Italy is the match to watch. Spain have not beaten Italy in a major competition since 1920. A draw in that fixture should be enough for both sides to see off Croatia and Ireland the rest of the way.

Group D: This quartet contains England, France, Ukraine and Sweden. The big question is can England screw this up? The resounding answer is yes. With Wayne Rooney banned and a tough trip to Donetsk to face the home side lined up last, the Three Lions are poised to crash out once again in spectacular fashion. Go with France and Sweden while enjoying the English implosion.

The sad saga of Freddy Adu

When last we saw the (still) young Freddy Adu, he was starring for the United States in a stirring Gold Cup final.

There were high hopes when Adu finally made his way back to the United States to play for Philadelphia. He was set to become the creative spark for a team sorely lacking one.

But a funny thing happened with the Union - Adu started only six games and went the full 90 minutes once. He scored only two goals and was non-existent in two playoff appearances for the Union, who were quickly bounced out by Houston.

So it shouldn't have been a shock that Adu was left unprotected by the Union in the expansion draft. And it should not have been surprising that Montreal didn't choose to take him, selecting washed-up Brian Ching instead.

Sure, Adu's price tag may have been a factor but hey, isn't the Canadian dollar worth more than the U.S. dollar now anyway? The sad truth is that Adu's days as a factor in U.S. soccer are over. He isn't getting callups by new coach Jurgen Klinsmann and isn't getting playing time in MLS - the 20th-best league in the world, if that.

Freddy Adu - it's truly over, folks.

Here he is US soccer fans!

We are proud to introduce Hertha Berlin young stud Alfredo Morales (above) to Jurgen Klinsmann's U.S. national team. Doesn't Morales look deft on the ball against mighty Bayern Munich?

Morales is having trouble breaking into a Hertha squad that has put up a solid campaign back in the top flight. But Klinsmann believes Morales can be a solid defensive midfielder for the U.S. And who are we to argue with Klinsi after the way he has revitalized football in the U.S?

You have to be impressed how he keeps his eyes upfield (below), a skill not seen in U.S. players. He's of Peruvian descent and has some skills. Can't wait to see him in Brazil in 2014!

Hertha BSC providing top US talent!

Loyal followers of this blog know that beloved German club Hertha BSC is back in the top flight and making major noise.

U.S. football coach Jurgen Klinsmann is clearly an admirer of Hertha and has included midfielder Alfredo Morales in his side for the States' upcoming tussles with France and Slovenia. Morales has seen limited action in two matches this season.

Said Klinsmann: “We are excited to introduce Alfredo Morales to the U.S. team. I have spoken with his coach at Hertha Berlin and he is full of compliments. He is on the way to being a starter there, and he can play as either a No. 6 (defensive midfielder) or as a right back.”

Now Klisnsmann may be fibbing a bit since there is little chance that Morales will be a starter anytime soon, with Hertha harbouring serious Europa League ambitions. Morales is eligible to play for three countries, including Germany and Peru.

TBG welcomes Morales to the United States team!

MLS playoff predictions

Loyal followers of this blog recall our MLS predictions back in March.

Now let us make our pre-playoff predictions after correctly predicting last season that Colorado would lift the MLS Cup.

So here goes ...

Wild-card round

New York 1, FC Dallas 0

The Red Bulls will take advantage of a floundering Dallas squad that crashed out of CONCACAF play and should be vulnerable.

Colorado 3, Columbus 1

The defending champions should coast at home against a Columbus team that overachieved most of the year.

Conference semifinals:

West
Los Angeles over New York 4-2 in aggregate

The marquee matchup that MLS fans want will happen. The Red Bulls should make a good account of themselves but the Galaxy have too much on the line to lose this East coast-West coast showdown.

Seattle over Real Salt Lake 5-2

Jason Kreis' side has been living on borrowed time too much this season. The Sounders should give them a football lesson.

East
Sporting KC over Colorado 3-2 (aet)

This shapes up as a classic MLS semifinal series. We'll take Kansas City to score in extra time at home.

Philadelphia over Houston 3-1

This is the matchup the Union wanted when they tanked against the Red Bulls and they should be able to get a result in Houston to go through.

Conference championships:

Seattle over Los Angeles 2-1

The Sounders have been waiting all year to prove to the Galaxy who the best team in the West really is.

Sporting KC over Philadelphia 2-0

A raucous atmosphere at Kansas City's new stadium should favor the home side here.

MLS Cup 2011

Sporting KC over Seattle 1-0

Kansas City will avenge two regular-season losses to Seattle in front of a sellout crowd in a spectacular championship game.

Shock result in CONCACAF

With World Cup qualifying heating up, there was a shock result in CONCACAF with Bermuda stunning Caribbean powerhouse Trinidad & Tobago.

This is great news for the Mexicans and Costa Ricans since the winner of Group B goes into their group. It was a great victory even though the home PA played the US national anthem instead of the Bermuda version.

It's a disappointing result for TNT, which is coached by German vavabond Otto Pfister. Pfister has coached numerous teams, including Zaire, Upper Volta, Bangladesh and Rwanda. Most famously, he was the coach of Togo during the players' revolt in the 2006 World Cup when he quit and then came back to coach the team. He may be leaving TNT soon after this result.

This brings to mind the fact that the German national team posed for an interesting team picture before the World Cup.

Is this an appropriate way to promote women's football? Take a look at the pictures and decide and leave us your comments.

Klinsmann: Judge me on November matches

United States head coach Jurgen Klinsmann wants you to know that you can throw out the results of his first three matches. That's because he didn't get a chance to schedule a gauntlet of games against Mexico, Costa Rica and Belgium.

Klinsmann gave a conference call Friday in which he highlighted that he does not yet have the control to do things his way.

Said Klinsmann: "So because I look at things differently and plan things differently, it's been quite a challenge, the first couple of weeks."

Now there's news that the revolutionary attacking style that has produced one goal in three matches won't be seen by U.S. fans until November, according to Klinsmann. Matchups with Honduras on Oct. 8 and with Ecuador three days later are still not ones that will reflect his leadership.

"Going forward, the first two games where I have my hand involved will be November," Klinsmann said. "I love to kind of get my hands around the program, building the first couple of weeks, build a lot of bridges."

So fear not, U.S. soccer fans! You only have to wait five matches to see what the real United States team will look like in November against some unnamed opponents.

Bob Bradley: "The Egyptian player is a talented one unlike the American"

Credit Bob Bradley for telling the truth. The man who led the United States to the top of a group containing mighty England and to a shock 2-0 victory in the Confederations Cup that ended Spain's incredible 35-match unbeaten run will coach the mighty Pharoahs of Egypt, the team that has won the last three African Nations Cups.

Egypt, alas, did not qualify for next year's event, and Bradley has been hired to lead the Pharoahs to the World Cup for the first time since 1990. He's also got a shot to get back to the Confederations Cup in Brazil in 2013 since the African Nations Cup that year will determine Africa's representative.

Judging by Bradley's words, he is relishing the chance to coach a more talented team. He told CNN Arabic that "The Egyptian player is a talented one unlike the American who depends mainly on his fitness."

Bradley is 100 percent right. The problem with the American soccer player is a lack of talent. Credit Bradley for telling it like it is, even though the truth hurts.

Hertha BSC with the shock win!

Second-half goals by Raffael and Peter Niemeyer were the difference as Hertha BSC shocked the world with a 2-1 victory over Bundesliga champion Borussia Dortmund on Saturday in a raucous Signal Iduna Park. The hosts' 18-match home unbeaten streak ended.

Billed as the "Battle of Champions," with Dortmund winning BL1 and Hertha winning BL2 in a landslide, the visitors employed their counter-attacking style to perfection, thwarting the Yellow-Blacks - playing without suspended Mario Gotze - at every turn.

After a first-half stalemate, Raffael burst in on goal past Mats Hummels and several other Dortmund defenders. He was stopped by Roman Weidenfeller, who blocked it off teammate Marcel Schmelzer right into the path of Raffael - who said, 'Thank you very much' and put it into the empty net.

Raffael would hit the woodwork two more times before Hertha made it 2-0 in the 82nd. BSC captain Andre Mijatovic's header off a corner kick was saved by Weidenfeller right into the knee of Niemeyer, who didn't know what hit him (the ball) and it went right into the net.

A late Dortmund goal created a nervy finish, but Hertha saw out the clock and set up next weekend's home clash with fellow promoted side Augsburg.

Said Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp: "Hertha are deserving winners."

Klopp is 100 percent right. Congratulations to Hertha for the victory and for a tremendous showing by the visiting supporters.

Dortmund may find things easier in their next home game against Arsenal on Tuesday night.

Getting ready for USA v. Belgium

It seems fitting that the third game of the Jurgen Klinsmann era is set for Brussels against Belgium at the King Badouin Stadium. It's appropriate since this is the venue formerly known as Heysel, where one of the world's greatest footballing disasters once took place.

Dubbed by US Soccer as the "Tussle in Brussels," it's the first chance for a European audience to see the new-look U.S. attack that has produced one goal in two games. To be fair, the team's best player - Clint Dempsey - has yet to suit up for the U.S. and that will change tonight.

Klinsmann is already upsetting European coaches by his selection process. AZ coach Gertjan Verbeek was not happy that in-form striker Jozy Altidore had to
fly all the way to LA for the match against Costa Rica on Friday.

It's hard to know how excited Belgium will be to play an inferior opponent after a disappointing draw at Azerbaijan that will likely take them out of contention for Euro 2012. It's not like national pride is at stake either since the country could be on the verge of splitting up and is currently under a caretaker government.

It all makes for a rather drab atmosphere for what shapes up to be another loss for the U.S. in the Klinsmann era.

Hertha fined 4,000 euros

The DFB has fined Hertha 4,000 Euros for pitch invasion in the Bundesliga opener against FC Nurnberg. This is a blow to the club's image, although it should be said that most of the Berlin faithful are docile and positive supporters.

The Beautiful Game does not condone running onto the pitch.

Quiet transfer deadline for Hertha

Not much noise was made by Hertha BSC during the transfer window.

Kaka was sent to Champions League participant APOEL in one move.

Former Hamburg man Aenis Ben-Hatira has now joined his hometown team, and the 23-year-old midfielder said "I hope I can take it to the next level."

Midfielder Daniel Beichler has gone out on loan to SV Ried after being at MSV Duisburg.

In addition, new father Rob Friend has been loaned to second-division Eintracht Frankfurt. Friend wasn't seeing much playing time anyway.

What these moves mean is that Hertha's squad is set as the club tries to cement a mid-table position. With five points from four matches, Hertha are on course for a creditable campaign. Right now midfield and central defense are the major problem areas while the strikers and goalkeeper look strong.

The next challenge is at league champion Dortmund, which will be without wunderkind Mario Gotze at the Signal Iduna Park. It's an ideal opportunity for Hertha to maintain their unbeaten away mark in front of the tremendous traveling support.

Actual result: 1-0

Hertha have five points through four matches and probably deserve two, and neither side deserved much from this drab affair.

Looks like the Wolves may face a season-long relegation battle along with Freiburg.

Hamburger SV v. 1. FC Koln

The pressure increases on Oenning and now Elia could be on his way to Italy. The northern German side is an abject mess.

Bayern did what they had to do and Lautern did what we thought they would do.

Bremen may not have been deserving winners but they have nine points through Matchday 4.

Bayer Leverkusen v. Borussia Dortmund

Hannover are unbeaten in four, although three of these matches have come at home in a fixture-heavy start for the 96ers.

The Royal Blues used a high tempo and persistence from Raul to take all three points at home.

Lahm rips into Klinsi, others

Shockwaves have rippled through Germany due to Philipp Lahm's controversial book in which he rips just about everyone - this blog being a notable exception.

He takes shots at former Bayern managers Louis Van Gaal, Felix Magath and notably current United States boss Jürgen Klinsmann's tenure with the Bavarians.

"All the players knew after about eight weeks that it was not going to work out with Klinsmann," he wrote. "The remainder of that campaign was nothing but limiting the damage." It soon became clear that "the Klinsmann experiment had failed."

Lahm rehashes the widely-known claim that Klinsmann knows nothing about football tactics or coaching. Other Klinsmann tactics include yoga and a meditation garden and hokey speeches.

One memorable speech from Klinsmann's Bayern tenure was when he told Ze Roberto "You have to score a goal." Another one came from the 2006 World Cup when he brought in a speaker before Germany's first match to discuss the docile nature of the Costa Rican players in a talk that was plain weird.

Now the United States has certainly been charmed before by charismatic leaders who had no idea what they are doing.

With that in mind, Klinsmann may be the perfect fit for the United States.

This may be the featured matchup of the weekend, and Stuttgart should give the home fans plenty to cheer about.

FCA has lasted unbeaten longer than champions Dortmund, but Sascha Molders and company could face a rude awakening against a revitalized Hoffenheim side.

Solbakken should be able to save his job in what shapes up to be his side's easiest fixture of the season.

Sunday

FSV Mainz 05 v. FC Schalke 04

Lewis Holtby returns to the Coface Arena - his hard-to-figure side flopped in Europe and could face the same fate that Andre Schurrle did two weeks ago against the surprising table toppers.

Hannover 96 v. Hertha BSC

Prediction: 1-2

Hannover are flying with three wins in three games, but prioritizing next week's trip to Spain could be costly against a Hertha side brimming with confidence.

Bundesliga Matchday 2 predictions

Saturday

SC Freiburg v. FSV Mainz 05

Prediction: 2-1

Tuchel used US basketball star Michael Jordan to inspire his team in a rousing opener, but Freiburg should be up for this challenge.

Hamburger SV v. Hertha BSC

Prediction: 2-0

FC Schalke 04 v. 1. FC Koln

Prediction: 3-1

Schalke were a tad unlucky in their opener and should bounce back at home since the Goats haven't won in Gelsenkirchen since 1993.

No Robben for Bayern could mean no victories, and the Wolves will be ready to play in front of their supporters after a rousing away victory.

Three points for either side would put the winner on six in a matchup of surprising sides from last season.

1899 Hoffenheim v. Borussia Dortmund

Prediction: 1-2

Stuttgart are unbeaten in their last 10 against 'Gladbach and TBG likes them to smash-and-grab all the points.

Sunday

FCA are already referring to this as a relegation six-pointer on Matchday 2. They may be right, with Hertha looking equally woeful.

Bayer Leverkusen v. Werder Bremen

Although Leverkusen have major problems in goal, it's tough to believe that Bremen will have any success on their travels at this point.

GOAT OF THE WEEK: Leverkusen goalkeeper Fabian Giefer's miscue put Mainz in front and made Robin Dutt look like a fool for taking American David Yelldell out of the 11 after a DFB-Pokal flameout.
